CHANCELLOR Gordon Brown has today (Friday, November 17, 2000) officially opened a £1.2 million housing development in his Dunfermline East constituency.
Mr Brown unveiled a plaque at the Sneddon Court complex in Kelty, which provides 25 homes for rent.
The project was built by Canmore Housing Association, using nearly £700,000 worth of grant aid from the Government’s national housing agency, Scottish Homes. Private funding was provided by the Dunfermline Building Society.
As well as mainstream housing, the development includes homes suitable for wheelchair users and elderly people. A mix of one, two and three-bedroomed properties have been created.
The Chancellor said: “I’m delighted to open this high-quality development, which provides much-needed, affordable housing for local people. I’d like to pass on my congratulations to Canmore, Scottish Homes and their partners.”
During his visit, Mr Brown met tenant Samantha Smart, who rents the only house in the development. The other 24 homes at Sneddon Court are all flats.
Miss Smart (28), who has two children Georgia (4) and Kelsey (3), said: “The new house is great. It’s nice and warm and there’s a small garden for the children to play in. They love it.”
Miss Smart grew up in Kelty and recently moved back to the town after a spell living in Ayrshire. Originally she moved into a private, rented flat. “It was up three flights of stairs, which is hardly suitable for small children,” she said. “I also have back problems, so lugging bags of shopping and two youngsters up all those stairs wasn’t good for me, either.”
Then she saw the sign for the Canmore development. “To start with, I was offered a flat, but then the house became available and I just took it. It’s a great place to live,” she said.
Paul Smith, the Chairman of Canmore, said: “I’m very pleased that the Chancellor has taken time out of his busy schedule to officially open Canmore’s latest development.
“The scheme has proved popular with local people, and we’re delighted it has been such as success. The project has also contributed to the regeneration of the centre of Kelty.”
He added: “Government subsidy to housing associations allows much-needed developments like this to go ahead. It’s therefore all the more fitting that the Chancellor – as both the local MP and a key Government figure – has been able to perform the opening ceremony.”
Canmore, and its private offshoot Malcolm Homes, recently completed Britain’s first, purpose-built, car-free housing development.
The £9.5 million Slateford Green site, off Slateford Road in Edinburgh, incorporates 120 eco-friendly flats, for rent, sale and shared ownership.
The architecturally striking development – which includes green-coloured exterior walls and an aluminium roof – incorporates a range of features to minimise the estate’s impact on the environment. Some of the homes for sale are still available.
