Growth in new firms in Falkirk area

THE number of new businesses being set up in Falkirk district is growing, according to figures revealed today.

A total of 220 start-up firms were supported by Falkirk Enterprise Action Trust (FEAT) last year – up from 194 in 1999. Bosses say
the entrepreneurial trend is continuing into 2001.

The news comes as FEAT prepares to host the Small Business Gateway Start Your Own Business Show – in a bid to encourage even more people to set up in business.

The event is being held in FEAT’s premises in Newhouse Business Park in Grangemouth tomorrow (Friday, March 9). Admission is FREE.

Russell Parker, of FEAT, said: “Across the UK there’s been a slowdown in the numbers of new businesses being established, so we’re obviously pleased to see the reverse trend in Falkirk district.

“Last year FEAT became part of the Small Business Gateway, a network which offers a range of support and services – many free – to both new and growing businesses.

“With the backing of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley, our main funder, we’re running the show to explain what the Gateway has to offer, and what packages of support are available locally.

“Hopefully we can encourage even more people to start their own businesses.”

Lorna Jack, the chief executive of Scottish Enterprise Forth Valley, said: “Obviously we’re pleased that more and more people are benefiting from the services we fund and support through FEAT.

“Setting up any business can be scary. However, with the right advice and assistance, more firms make it through their first year of trading and go on to greater success.

“Good quality support from the outset is essential and we hope that anyone visiting the Small Business Gateway show will take advantage of all that’s on offer.”

The Small Business Gateway Start Your Own Business Show opens at FEAT at 11 a.m. tomorrow (Friday) and runs until 7 p.m.

As well as advice and information from entrepreneurs, financial advisers and business experts, there will also be seminars on marketing your own business and developing business ideas.

FEAT provides a range of business support services – many free – to help start-up and established businesses. To find out more about FEAT please contact 01324 665500.
