£7 million civic complex opens in Bathgate

A NEW civic complex in West Lothian has opened its doors to the public.

The £7 million Bathgate Partnership Centre, off the town’s South Bridge Street, was built by Ogilvie Construction for West Lothian Council.

The striking new building, designed by architects BDP, brings council and community services together under one roof. It opened to users on Thursday, September 15, 2011.

The complex includes:

  • the town’s community centre;
  • a library;
  • a registration office;
  • a Customer Information Services (CIS) base;
  • a Food Creations Café;
  • council office accommodation;
  • meeting spaces for community groups; and
  • a landscaped garden, complete with an orchard.

The centre also houses the council’s Advice Shop, which provides help and assistance on a range of topics – including income maximisation, debt, fuel poverty and energy savings. It has also become the new headquarters for Adult Basic Education in West Lothian.

Jim Walker, the council’s executive councillor for culture and leisure, said: “I’m delighted to see the new Bathgate Partnership Centre, Lindsay House, open to the public.

“The centre will bring a new focus to Bathgate and meet the growing needs of the community. The new building is modern, attractive, practical and flexible, and the spaces will be used to their maximum potential.

“Bathgate Partnership Centre offers an excellent opportunity to join up council and community services in one central, convenient location. It also creates efficiencies, as services can share information and facilities to provide a better service for local people.

“It’s a huge task to move all these services into their superb new home, so we would ask local residents for their patience during the transition period.”

Phil McEwan, the managing director of Ogilvie Construction, said: “This new centre breathes new life into the heart of Bathgate, and provide a stunning building for local people to use. We’ve enjoyed a good relationship with West Lothian Council in the past and we were pleased to be awarded the contract to build the new centre.”

An official opening ceremony is due to take place at the Centre later this autumn.
